I am currently accepting custom colour requests for hand-painted Japanese style geisha, painted in sumi-e inks on handmade 8 and 1/4" x 11 and 3/4" inches (A4) papyrus scrolls. Each geisha could be a mysterious kitsune fox... and has a traditional-style kitsune mask in two colours.

Choose from any one of these poses, and just send me your chosen colour scheme for the fan, mask, and kimono, and I will paint it! These look great framed, or would make a pretty and unusual gift for someone, especially a fan of geisha, kitsune, or Japanese art in general. The scrolls have a lovely natural feel and texture... you can keep them rolled up as a scroll, or hang them up on the wall in a frame. DMC Beowulf Statue (Devil May Cry)

It's been ages but I finally managed to finish an old fan project, the demon Beowulf from the video game Devil May Cry 3. As 18 ft demons go, I thought he was pretty adorable and deserved to be made into a sculpture.

As far as I know there has never been a Beowulf sculpture or Beowulf toy that Kotobukiya made or that CAPCOM otherwise released. :( Mine is the only Beowulf I know of that can sit on your desk as a bad luck mascot.

Hi everyone!

Alice in Wonderland DRINK ME bottle art prints and ACEO art cards are still for sale! Printed Giclée-style by a printing expert professional on premium quality photographic semigloss art paper, featuring a photograph of cute little vintage "DRINK ME" bottle that I created, and the "tiny golden key" Alice uses to open the door into the garden. Minimalist but elegant, was what I'm 'going for' with them.

The art prints measure 8 and a quarter by 11 and three-quarter inches (that's handy A4 size) and the ACEO cards are the standard 2 and a half by 3 and a half inches, and will fit into a regular ACEO album. Colour print and ACEO are both open editions, and the sepia art print is a limited run of 500 only. ACEOs are signed on the back by me in gold ink, and sepia prints are signed by me and numbered on the back in gold. :)

Open for Commissions!

Hi everyone!

I'm currently accepting and considering commissions for sculptures and statues of custom mythical creatures, wolves, etc., and some pieces in my gallery here are still available for purchase (so if you'd like to know the status of one of these pieces, please contact me and I'll let you know if it's for sale). I'll also consider custom/commissions of humans and dolls if anyone is interested in those (and paintings!)

When I say I will consider commissions, I will do just that - please note me to discuss your idea so I can see if it can be done. I work in the scale of about 3" (inches) all the way up to about 24" (inches) in size/length, but anything larger I can't currently ship to the buyer. So requests within this size limit are fine, but really big ones I don't think we can do just yet.

Please be aware that I may turn down commissions if they are not suitable in some way. I will consider every request, however!

Commission Info -

Turnaround time
By their nature all commissions vary, so the time I need for each one and the price of each one will always be slightly different. In general though, I will ask in the region of four to eight weeks to complete commissions, because I also have other work that I need to do alongside commissions. If you have a request that is to be a gift or a Christmas present, please let me know in advance because I will need time!

Pricing
This really depends on two things - the amount of time the commission takes, and the materials needed. I supply the materials myself to make my sculptures, but I also need to cover the cost of them, so the materials will be included within the price of your commission. The hours I put in to making a sculpture is my job, so I need to charge a liveable wage for my time. If a sculpture takes a week to make, it seems fair enough that I should charge a week's average wage for it. So please expect that complex commissions like wolves and people will take at the least around a week or two to plan out, gather and buy the needed materials and then construct from scratch, and pricing will begin around £250-£300 ( an average skilled week's wage). For smaller commissions like the snails which take only a few days, they will be cheaper. Again, each commission is different, so to give you an accurate price quote, I will need to discuss your idea with you and find out what is needed and how long it will take.

Shipping costs will be taken into account and added to the price of your commission.

Payment

I accept payment via Paypal, but I may consider other options, depending on where the customer lives and what the option is. I'm afraid I can't take non-UK postal orders or money orders.

There are three methods of payment:

1) 100% upfront payment of the full price.

2) 50% deposit at the start of the project and 50% on the finish of the project.

3) Installments or 'layaway'. A set of monthly payments as agreed between me and the customer. But 50% of the full amount will count as a deposit.

Updates

If the customer asks, I will update them on the progress of their commission via email with photographs, so they can see the progress. Otherwise I will send finished photographs anyway when the piece is complete.

Shipping

I ship to almost everywhere. Sculptures need to be safe and secure in transit, so the shipping costs will be included in your commission's price and will include tracked and signed for delivery, as well as insurance. I can also arrange for expedited priority deliveries at extra cost.

Sculptures are often delicate, and will be shipped double-, or even triple-boxed for safety depending on their size and shapes. Always double boxed, though, and the inner box containing the sculpture will be lined with foam and protective wadding to keep the sculpture immovable while being shipped. The outer box will contain more wadding and packing noodles to absorb shocks during transit. This method is used by almost all selling sculptors to ensure safe delivery of their items.

This "Okami" is a Japanese shinto sun goddess Amaterasu in wolf form, as depicted in the videogame "Okami". As the titular Okami deity, you spend the game bringing life to places that have withered, helping people, battling supernatural creatures, and defeating the eight-headed demon snake, Orochi. Much of the game's background and characters are modified from the original Japanese mythology. It's a neat game with humour and a lighter approach than most videogames to the supernatural, and has become something of a cult classic. Wii controller hurts my wrists after a while, though.

Fenrir Art

So I think Blogger had a rollback last night... my last post and the comments on it were gone this morning along with some edits to my layout. Oh well. Start again!

After more than five months on the shelf I finally finished this one of a kind armoured maquette sculpture of Fenrir, you can read about the making process in this post. I learned a lot about barding in the process, and I'm now able to fur a maquette. Quite proud of myself on that one! Furring is one of those things you see some talented artists doing here and there but almost nobody mentions how it's done.

When the Norse Gods saw that Fenrir, the gigantic and ferocious wolf, was growing and growing in size and appetite and strength, they became concerned he would one day prove a great enemy... and so they tricked Fenrir into a contest of strength, that would have him chained in fetters to see if he could break them. They first bound him with Leyding, a strong fetter, which Fenrir broke with his might; then again with Dromi, which Fenrir struggled to break but still did. Finally, the gods sent for the rarest of items to be fashioned into the strongest fetter of all - a silken ribbon called Gleipnir, and asked Fenrir if he should like to test his strength against it. Sensing trickery, Fenrir accepted only if the God Tyr should place his hand in the wolf's mouth while he was bound with the ribbon as an act of good faith. So the Gods were at last able to bind Fenrir and hold him fast till Ragnarok, as he could not break the spellbound silken band, and the gods laughed as he struggled and snarled - all except Tyr, who lost his hand.

Claudine and Cleo

Breathing out my first sigh of trepidation as I approach human bust sculptures for the first time! I think what worries me most is the absolute focus that is always upon the face and expression of a bust. And just to make it that bit harder, I've decided to make an 18th Century child vampire together with her pet cat... so it won't even be a regular bust, more of a complete torso plus a furry animal. I do have these nutty ideas about realising something in 3D and have to attempt it just to get them out of my head...

Anyhow, here are the concept sketch for colours of Claudine, so at least I'll be aware of the fabric tones I'll need to purchase for her clothing, along with faux fur for the cat and adornments for her wig. I already have Wensleydale coming out of my ears so at least that's one thing I won't have to hunt for.

Her face is coming along okay so far with Living Doll, although the weight of her head is worrying me a little... this will be a 5" plus bust so I can't expect it to be weightless, but never having done one before, this is all unfamiliar ground. I've packed her out with aluminium foil as usual and an armature made from five 16 gauge wires plus brass tubing, but I guess a 2.5" head is just pretty heavy in general.

Hi folks,

I'm attempting to make a chocobo this month, loosely based on the chocobo cavalry of Final Fantasy X. Here's some progress pics.

She's about 80% finished... the wings are already done, and when they go on they will mostly cover the saddle strap and stirrups, sadly. =( So I thought I'd show them before they're covered up for good! She will also be wearing chest plate armour, which is already finished. All that's really left to make is her head and chocobo helmet.

OKAMI Sculpture - Amaterasu!

Steampunk Skull

Hi folks,

I'm not the first to make a Steampunk skull I know, but how about a Steampunk piece with some 'history' behind it? I love figureheads - the carved figures on the fronts of old-fashioned seafaring ships, some of which obviously have some significance to the maker, as gargoyles often do to stone masons (they are sometimes known to carve themselves as gargoyles leering out from the eaves of buildings). This piece is a small bronze-effect figurehead for the front of a steampunk racing airship, made from bone-mimicking casting resin, bronzed and given a weathered patina look. Adding the patina last into all the crevices is always my fave bit.

"One of the most famous propellor airships of the Steampunk era, the HMS Viator was the first to cross the Atlantic in just under seven days, with the new twenty-four-propellor steam traction "Swifternesse" engine, designed and built by the eminent airship engineer Dr. Marius Klokk."

Skull measures 8" x 4 and 1/4" and sits on a solid mahogany felted base. Steampunk fans may want to take a look at its Etsy listing...

There will be a few more OOAK slugs to come before I move on to a new subject, so without further ado, introducing... the fairy godslug. And why can't a fairy godslug have wings, I ask? ;) This 3" sculpt was fun to do - I don't often get a chance to go all-out with the bright yellows, but there are bright yellow slugs out there in the world, so I'm not completely crazy. Their wings are invisible normally, of course.

The Making of Fenrir

Hi folks!

It's been a long few months since my last update, with lots of Life intervening between me and my art projects... I got started on a new one though, an OOAK sculpt of Fenrir (or Fenrisulven, the gigantic wolf from Norse mythology) which is almost complete. I thought I'd share a step by step glimpse into how it is being made.

This is an ambitious project for me; I've never made a furred maquette before, and this one's more than a couple of months in the planning, design and execution. Not only did the maquette need realistic fur, but he also required a custom-built suit of armour which I was determined should be made from 100% chased plate metal. The striking contrast of textures of metal and fur is what I had in mind in the vision for this piece, so I felt it was important to ensure the materials I used were as close to reality as possible. I've learned a thing or two about flocking, armour and barding since I began! Choosing and finding the right materials for the job was a painstaking process, especially when adapting them for miniature work.

He still needs a head of course, which hopefully I can finish up in the next few weeks, and which will arguably be the trickiest part. Scroll down to see the project unravelling back to some pretty humble-looking origins...

When he's finished, Fenrir will most likely be up for sale, but not before I get some nice shots of him strutting his stuff. My next update will show the finishing stages of the head, and finished plate armour suit on display separately.

This came from a sepia ink and watercolour painting I've just finished, but I felt like playing around with the design and seeing if I can come up with something nice for print. It might work well as an ACEO? I like the way the stormy background came out...

Alice in Wonderland Drink Me Bottle

Hi folks,

I'm still making collectible "Drink Me" curios, inspired by Lewis Caroll's Alice in Wonderland stories. I've had a lot of interest in these in the run-up to Christmas, but I just wanted to mention for the record: if you're interested in one or know someone who's interested in one - they're all one-of-a-kind vintage bottles - very hard to find two exactly alike! So if you see one on my site or on my Etsy or eBay store, get there quick; it's 'first come first served'! I might never find another the same to make into a curio, and it could be impossible for me to make some like the ones I've already sold. =)

I've spent a lot of time collecting Victorian bottles, and selecting the best and most unique ones to be made into little sculptures. They are available with (or without) a solid felt-lined turned mahogany base, with an OOAK certificate of authenticity. The bottles are geniune Victorian glass, with a lokta "DRINK ME" tag and real removable cork. If you're an Alice collector, or just love anything vintage, this might be right up your alley (or make a great gift for someone)!

Mad Hatter Painting

Hullo folks,

The latest madness:

Mad Hatter: "Time for Tea"

I've been checking out some cubist paintings lately; I've never looked into the style much before, but after reading about what cubism is and how it creates an image 'indirectly' out of contrasts of light and shade and geometrical shapes, I was intrigued. It wasn't exactly straightforward to paint a cubist picture: I had to deconstruct and reconstruct what I was trying to depict beforehand - 'mangle it up' a bit, which the audience can reconstruct for themselves in their own way. Some cubist pictures are more abstract and extreme than others... but I prefer less rigid/geometric kinds - those with human figures and ambiguous faces (like Picasso's "Weeping Woman" or his "Massacre in Korea").

Anyway, carrying on an Alice in Wonderland tack, I decided to make some small paintings with a cubist 'flavour' to them. The first - and most irrisistible - has to be the Hatter. A misplaced face and twisted fingers seem to lend themselves freely to the idea of insanity or a multiple personality or a broken mind! I've also got plans to try Alice, a Cheshire Cat and a White Rabbit in this style. Please let me know what you think. . .
